Priest Lake Sled Dog Race
The shortest day of the year has come signaling the official start to winter. For many that means taking to the trails around the Inland Northwest on snowshoes, skis, or snowmobiles. However, for some residents it means hitching up some dogs to sled or a skier and taking to the region's many groomed trails. The Inland Empire Sled Dog Association represents a number of the mushers in the area and each year puts on a race at Priest Lake.
The Priest Lake Race is in fact one of the oldest sled dog races in the US! The race attracts mushers from all around the Pacific Northwest. It includes both sprint and mid-distance classes and several junior classes. Mushers come young and old, male and female. Women compete against men and there is no advantage to either in dog sledding. In 2012 the race will be held on the weekend of February 4-5. Learn more about the race at: www.iesda.org. See you in February!
